Lorenzo de Medici was only 20 when in 1469 he took the reins of government in Florence. Despite being a novice, he soon proved he was willing to exercise power more strongly than his father YSU grandfather, initiators of that regime absolute, lifelong, hereditary, monarchy disguised true republic, which was the lordship of Florence.
For starters, he secured a Council of One Hundred, so that the functions of the legislature remained in their hands. Become undisputed master of the city, Lorenzo was surrounded by relatives and supporters, behaved like a prince and turned away to other families of key government positions.

This attitude deteriorated the relationship with the Pazzi clan, rivals of the Medici. Her first vengeance was to give the Pope Sixtus IV, the money needed to buy the town of Imola, Lorenzo wished for himself. Between the two families declared an open war, and the tension reached the point that, in collusion with the Archbishop of Pisa, the Pazzi planned the murder of Lorenzo.
The day chosen to give the coup was on Sunday April 26, 1478. The venue, the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. Was certain the presence of Lorenzo and his younger brother Giuliano, a young friendly and loved by all that till then had remained outside the political intrigue.
The conspirators, with the collaboration of some monks, waited for the temple was full. When the officiating lifted the Host and the faithful bowed their heads, armed men pounced on the brothers. Giuliano
was shot to death by Francisco de Pazzi and died almost instantly, Lorenzo, though wounded, managed to protect lunges with his cloak, fell amid the uproar and led to the sacristy, putting safe.
Once order was restored in the cathedral, a group of friends escorted him to his residence. When that same afternoon he appeared before the people, was greeted by a cheering crowd.

Supporters of the Medicis were not slow to avenge the death of Giuliano.
James de 'Pazzi and the archbishop of Pisa tried unsuccessfully to lead a revolt and were executed, the second was hanged, with all his clothes liturgical, on the balcony of Palazzo Vecchio. Rafael
Riario, nephew of the pope and collaboration suspect was locked up in prison.
Retaliation reached many other members of the Pazzi, sentenced to death or imprisoned during the fierce repression that followed these violent episodes.

Far from discrediting the Medicis, the plot strengthened ties between the family and the people of Florence
